Owners of the Imola circuit have announced plans to upgrade the venue in a bid to secure the long-term future of the San Marino Grand Prix.
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has questioned the staging of two rounds of the championship in Italy.
But a euros 10million upgrade has been put in place to try and ensure the contract to stage F1 races is renewed in 2009.
Imola's mayor Massimo Marchignoli hopes the project will be approved by the end of March and completed in time for the 2007 race.
