ESPN will televise the tournament, the first Grand Slam event of the season, to more than 40 countries and territories throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
The deal ensures that ESPN will televise all four Grand Slams in 2006 in Latin America.
ESPN’s four networks in Latin America, including ESPN’s pan-regional signal, as well as local outlets ESPN Dos, ESPN Brasil, and ESPN+, will combine to televise more than 100 hours of tournament coverage.
The network will offer complete coverage of Australian Open 2006, from early round matches to live coverage of both the men’s and women’s semi-finals and finals.
Tim Bunnell, senior vice president, programming and marketing, ESPN International, said: “By scheduling the event across ESPN’s multiple networks in the region, we can demonstrate our unique ability to showcase the tournament, customise coverage, and maximise exposure.”
ESPN’s relationship with Tennis Australia and the Australian Open also extends to the U.S., where the tournament is televised by both ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.
