SKY LOOKS TO BROADEN APPEAL

UK satellite giant BSkyB yesterday launched a download service allowing existing customers to watch films, football highlights and news on their PCs and mobile phones.

The broadcaster, which last year made a major push into high-speed internet access through its £211m takeover of Easynet, said existing subscribers to its sports and movie channels will be able to sign up for free to the 'Sky by broadband' and 'Sky by mobile' services.

Users of the broadband service will be able download more than 200 movies to their computers, access clips from more than 1,000 Sky Sports video clips (including Premier League and Champions League football matches) and view news items.

Broadband accounts for nearly 60 per cent of all UK internet connections and almost half of Sky digital customers have broadband-connected PCs.

Meanwhile the mobile service will give subscribers access to Sky entertainment, sports, news, betting and weather on their phones.
