SEVEN-TEN WIN RIGHTS FIGHT

Tagged in &

Seven and Ten networks have snatched the AFL broadcast rights from Nine, in the biggest broadcast rights deal in Australian sporting history.

However, it could be many weeks before Australian football fans know the new TV schedule, reports The Age newspaper.

The winning bid used Seven's first-and-last rights clause to match the record A$780million offer on December 23 from Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd (PBL), which owns Channel Nine.

The AFL will now start talks with the winning networks to agree scheduling details, particularly how the game is broadcast in the crucial northern state markets.

Another priority for Seven and Ten will be to work out a deal with pay-TV provider Foxtel, where PBL is a 25 per cent owner.

Nine, Ten and Foxtel currently hold the rights in a five-year, A$500million deal that expires at the end of this season.
