COLLEGE VENUE STUDY TO BE REVEALED

The findings of a unique research project into the security of university sports venues in the US will be revealed at next month's International Sports Security Summit.

Veteran sports administrator Dr Lou Marciani, director of the School of Human Performance and Recreation at the University of Southern Mississippi, led the project to produce a model for security standards and best practice.

He will deliver and discuss its key findings with delegates from sports bodies and security organisations from more than 30 countries at the Summit on January 19 and 20.

The project was funded by a Homeland Security Grant. As a result of the research model, the University of Southern Mississippi developed a Centre for Sports Security Management which aims to develop and implement sports security academic programmes and provide certification programmes for sports security administrators, foster sports security research projects and grants as well as serve as a clearinghouse for significant information relative to sports security issues.

Dr Marciani is one of a number of specialist speakers assembled for an event which has attracted significant support from the security manufacturing and consulting sectors. The conference's keynote speaker is Peter Ryan, security consultant to the International Olympic Committee and widely acknowledged as one of the world's leading experts in sports event security.

Other speakers include Giovani Pulice, head of security of TOROC, the organising committee for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, and Vassilios Konstandinos, head of the Greek police security operation for the Athens Olympic Games.

The conference takes place at the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre, London.
