LONDON 2012 AQUATIC CENTRE PLANS REJECTED

The UK Government has turned down plans for the London Olympics 2012 aquatic centre for going two times over budget.

London 2012 organisers will stick with architect Zaha Hadid, but she has been instructed to bring costs back into line with the original £75million estimate.

London's bid to the IOC pledged that the centre - a 20,000-seat arena with two 50-metre pools and a diving pool - would cost £75million

"I cannot give anyone a complete assurance that costs for the 2012 Games will not rise," said Olympic minister Tessa Jowell.

"But what I will do is be absolutely ruthless in ensuring that any potential overspend, no matter how small, is caught early and driven back down wherever possible."
