UEFA CHIEF ACCUSES CLUBS OF GREED

Tagged in &

The president of UEFA, Lennart Johansson, has warned Europe's biggest clubs that their "greed" is endangering grassroots football.

G14 members, Europe's elite clubs, want governing bodies FIFA and UEFA to pay player salaries in World Cups and European Championships.

Belgian club Charleroi is taking on FIFA in court, claiming that releasing players to national associations without payment is illegal.

But Johansson said: "Too many people involved in football, clubs and individuals, are too greedy."

Johansson, who is a vice-president of FIFA as well as leading UEFA, says that if both governing bodies have to rethink their policies then money made from major tournaments would have to be diverted away from the grassroots.

He pointed out that while the UEFA Champions League gave clubs the opportunity to make much more money than they previously did, it also gave UEFA the opportunity to take 30-40 per cent to give back to member associations.
