PGA TOUR CONSIDERS PLAYOFFS

The PGA Tour is considering a points chase and a late-summer playoff for 2007, ahead of negotiations for a new television contract next month.

Commissioner Tim Finchem plans to unveil details next week at the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

The schedule and television proposal won't be approved, however, until the policy board meets on November 7.

By restructuring the schedule, the PGA Tour hopes to spark interest amid tough competition with other major sports for television ratings.

USATODAY reports that the playoff system will involve players accumulating points during the season to earn a spot in an August-September series of four tournaments.
