WOMEN IN BUT BOXING OUT FOR BEIJING

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved new events for the 2008 Olympics that will include about 80 more women, but rejected women's boxing.

It was felt that the quality of the female boxing was not up to Olympic standards.

Despite the changes, women will still be outnumbered by men in Beijing, reports aroundtherings.com

In football, hockey and handball the IOC’s executive board approved increasing the number of female teams from 10 to 12.

For swimming, the 10km open water swim for men and women was added, while the women’s 3000m steeplechase has been added in athletics.

In table tennis, the doubles event will be replaced with team events.
