Hawk-Eye uses carefully positioned cameras to accurately plot the trajectory of a ball as a computer graphic and has proved a hit for broadcasters for a number of years in a variety of sports as on an on-screen value-add.
Now, however, it will become part of the official’s arsenal on the tennis court after the ITF approved its use by umpires in international tournaments after the agreement was ratified by both the ATP and WTA Tours.
Said Peter Salmon, chief executive of the Television Corporation, which owns Hawk-Eye: “This is a huge vote of confidence in Hawk-Eye and confirmation that it's the only system capable of delivering the accuracy demanded by the tennis authorities.”
Earlier this summer the ITF had rejected the use of such technologies during the US Open.
