ATHLETIC BILBAO AGREES TO SHIRT SPONSORSHIP

Spanish Primera Liga club Athletic Bilbao have once again asked and received permission from it’s members to accept shirt sponsorship.

Fifty-eight per cent of voters approved the management’s proposals to actively seek a sponsor.

Athletic Club, like both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, is a member-run institution and previously asked it’s members to OK plans for a shirt sponsor in 1991.

Bilbao’s current leadership claim that in order to compete in modern football, the need to maximise revenue is fundamental.

Apart from a short deal last year with the local government to promote the Basque region on the club’s shirts, Athletic have followed the path of FC Barcelona and refused to deal with shirt sponsors until now.

Last year FC Barcelona received a similar vote of confidence from it’s members and is believed to be still negotiating with a number of potential shirt sponsors.
