The listed company issued a statement to the London Stock Exchange denying weekend press reports a Russian consortium was about to mount a bid and bring with it a £75m fund for players, which had sent its stock price rising, but admitting a ‘preliminary approach’ had been made.
The statement said: “The directors of Aston Villa plc have noted the weekend press comment and the consequent rise in the share price of the company. The board wish to make it clear that the press comment is inaccurate and unfounded.
“However, the board has received a preliminary approach which could lead to an offer for the company. Shareholders will be updated of any further developments.”
