SPORTS BACK US RELIEF EFFORT

Sports bodies have made donations and pledged their support in the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy.

The US Tennis Association (USTA) will donate $500,000 from US Open proceeds toward the American Red Cross hurricane relief effort for the affected communities in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

The USTA says it is also working with players and the sport's governing bodies on other initiatives.

The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and ATP have also agreed a charitable initiative.

Players will donate autographed tennis equipment, apparel and memorabilia throughout the remainder of the US Open for an auction to benefit the American Red Cross.

The NFL has donated $1million to relief efforts and a day after the New York Yankees donated $1million, Major League Baseball and its players' association announced they would also contribute $1million.

NASCAR has said it will support the efforts of the American Red Cross "in every way possible" following the disaster.

Working alongside its partner, Turner Sports Interactive, NASCAR is setting up a designated web page at www.NASCAR.com to co-ordinate fan support of the relief efforts.
