TERRORIST THREAT DRIVES UP WORLD CUP INSURANCE PREMIUM

Organisers of next year’s FIFA World Cup have taken out a euros 158million insurance policy against its cancellation.

Juergen Goerling, head of sport coverage at the Hamburg-Mannheimer insurance group, told Capital magazine the premium would cost five million euros but would be much higher if the World Cup finals had been held in Britain or Spain.

He said the higher cost of the insurance policy for 2006 reflected the heightened risk of a terror attack that could disrupt the tournament which runs from June 9 to July 9.

"It's obvious that this premium would be less if al Qaeda did not exist," Goerling said. "But it's also obvious that this premium would be higher if the World Cup were taking place in Britain or Spain.

"As participants in the war in Iraq, these countries are more endangered."
