The UK free-to-air broadcaster enjoyed a 42 per cent share of all people watching TV at the time, as England failed to capture the last Australian wicket to win the Test.
It follows a 4.1 million audience and 44 per cent share on the Sunday lunchtime of the previous Test match at Edgbaston.
The previous high for Channel 4 was the climax to England's victory at Lord's over the West Indies in 2000, which attracted 5.2 million viewers.
It is the free-to-air broadcaster's last season covering Test cricket in England before the contract passes to pay-TV channel Sky Sports.
