The highest opening weekend crowds since 1963 welcomed the start of the new Coca-Cola Football League season in the UK.

More than 400,000 people attended the 36 matches played in the Coca-Cola Championship, League 1 and League 2.

The average attendance for the opening weekend was 11,223, an increase of more than five per cent on last season.

Football League operations director Andy Williamson said: “Crowds at Football League matches have enjoyed a sustained period of growth over the last 20 years and it is encouraging to see this continuing into the new season."
