The 32,000-seater stadium will be home to Swiss club Young Boys and will also be used for international matches.
New stadiums have been completed in Basel and Geneva and work is due to begin on the fourth Euro 2008 stadium in Zurich later this year.
The new, 32,000 seat Wankdorf stadium – built on the site of the stadium which hosted the 1954 World Cup final - has features including 8,000 square metres of solar panelling and an artificial pitch, due to be laid during this season's winter break.
The artificial pitch will be taken up for the European Championship because UEFA rules prevent tournaments from using a mixture of playing surfaces.
