SEVEN BID FOR 2014 WINTER OLMYPICS

The International Olympic Committee says that seven cities will bid for the right to stage the 2014 Winter Olympics

It had been anticipated that nine cities would join the fray but the final list excludes expected bids from Munich (Germany) and Harbin (China.).

The seven are Kazakhstan's largest city Almaty, Georgia's Borjomi, the Spanish city of Jaca, South Korea's Pyeongchang, Austria's Salzburg, Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi and the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

The IOC decision on the 2014 venue will be made in July 2007.

Salt Lake City staged the 2002 Winter Olympics. Turin will host next year's Games and Vancouver is the 2010 venue.
