O'Neill said the candidates short-listed for the job would all prefer a training camp to the match, which was scheduled to be played at Fulham's Craven Cottage on 17 August.
"The remaining candidates believe they will get much more value out of a training camp rather than a match," O'Neill said in a statement.
But O'Neill said the Socceroos would play at least one match in London in October, with another international fixture also likely.
Frank Farina ended his six-year spell as coach following the Confederations Cup in Germany last month and is likely to be replaced by PSV Eindhoven coach Guus Hiddink.
