NHL TO VOTE ON CBA

The National Hockey League's board of governors will meet in New York on Friday to ratify a new collective bargaining agreement with the players' union and avert a repeat of last year's lock out.

Last week, the NHL and the Players' Association reached an agreement in principle, which is likely to be approved by the players in a meeting in Toronto tomorrow and by the board of governors in a vote on Friday.

According to media reports, the six-year deal will include a salary cap of between $21 million and $39 million per team, and a 24 percent rollback of salaries for players on existing contracts. The agreement would also allow NHL players to take part in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

The board of governors meeting will be followed by a new conference in which NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is expected to outline plans to win back the support of the fans.
