2012 BILL SET FOR DEBATE

A crucial Bill paving the way to help speed up preparations for London’s hosting of the 2012 Olympic Games will receive its second reading debate in the House of Commons in the UK tomorrow.

The Bill was published on Friday, less than ten days after London won the right to host the event.

Normally Bills have a two-week break between publication and parliamentary debate but agreement has been secured to schedule the Second Reading debate four days after publication in order to accelerate preparatory work on the infrastructure for the Games.

The Bill is required so that the Government can create a public sector body to facilitate the staging of the Games, manage the Government's interest in the Olympic project and manage the public money going in.

The main provisions include setting up the Olympic Delivery Authority to manage public sector involvement in the Games; grant the ODA planning and land acquisition rights; provide greater protection of Olympic and Paralympic IP rights; and restrict opportunities for the commercial exploitation of the Games.
