Rome won selection from fierce competition from Athens, Moscow, and Japan’s Yokohama.
FINA president Mustapha Larfaoui said: “The difficulty of our choice proves that these four bidders were excellent.
“FINA is very proud to count on these prestigious candidates. Their effort is the guarantee that the FINA brand and the impact of our sport worldwide is constantly improving.”
Montreal hosts the event in 2005, and Melbourne in 2007.
Governing body FINA has selected Rome to host the 2009 World Swimming Championships.
