SELIG WANTS TOUGHER DOPING RULES FOR BASEBALL

Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said he would like to see the game's anti-doping penalties toughened up.

However, he did insist the current policy is working. But he still said he would like to see the penalties for doping "go to 50 games, 100 games and life" bans.

"We're having ongoing discussions, also independent testing," he said.

"The current programme is working. Make no mistake about it, it is working. But there's an integrity issue here, and that's why I believe baseball needs a tougher programme so that people understand that we will rid the sport of steroids under all circumstances."

He also said baseball would soon join rival sports in launching its own television network.
