BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL LOSE OLYMPIC STATUS

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has voted to axe baseball and softball from the 2012 Olympics in London.

The sports were the only ones not to receive a majority of votes by IOC members at their meeting in Singapore.

Golf, karate, roller sport, rugby and squash are all in line as possible replacements. A decision on which sport will be admitted is to take place on Saturday.

It is the first time a sport has been cut from the Olympic programme since polo suffered the same fate in 1936.
