2012 BID NEWS: NEW YORK SETS OUT STADIUM PLANS

New York has revealed details of the revised Olympic Stadium planned for its Olympic Park Cluster.

The Cluster will also host tennis, rowing, canoe/kayak, archery and water polo as well as the Main Press Center and International Broadcast Center.

The state-of-the-art 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium will host the opening ceremonies, closing ceremonies, athletic competitions (track and field) and the soccer finals.

The Olympic Stadium remains in one of the three clusters and is described as being “fully consistent with New York's Games concept, including plans for transportation, security, accommodations and finance”. Athlete travel time from the village will be 17 minutes.

On Friday, New York 2012 submitted the revised IOC candidature file to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board. It included letters of approval from the IAAF, FIFA and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as well as the required guarantees.

As part of its revised plans, New York has also outlined a legacy programme for athletics.

Following the Games, 20,000 seats from the Olympic Stadium would be permanently installed at the new Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island growing its capacity to 25,000 and allowing it to host high-profile national and international athletics competitions.

The $42million Icahn Stadium opened in April and is the only state-of-the-art IAAF approved athletics stadium in the US.

Said New York City deputy mayor for economic development and rebuilding and NYC2012 founder Dan Doctoroff: “Icahn Stadium joins the Track and Field Armory, already restored with an investment of more than $20million, making New York the premiere US home for indoor and outdoor athletics competitions.

“This will allow New York to aggressively pursue major athletics events so that this great Olympic sport will once again become a major element of the city’s sports calendar.”
