NEW UNITED STANDING AT FOOT OF PYRAMID

Disillusioned Manchester United fans are today expected to enter a new team, Football Club United of Manchester, in the United Counties League.

The move follows Malcolm Glazer’s take-over of the English soccer giants and reports say that more than 2,600 supporters have pledged money to help the new club.

If the club’s application is accepted they will kick-off next season at the bottom of the English football pyramid.

A spokesman for FC United told the BBC: "The venture is quickly gathering momentum as will become more and more evident to our supporters.

"We will be announcing further developments in the coming days and are optimistic of a successful outcome."

The move has echoes of the creation of AFC Wimbledon by supporters of the former Premier League club which was moved 80 miles from its home ground to Milton Keynes, and renamed the MK Dons.

But while AFC Wimbledon attracted a major percentage of the relatively small Wimbledon supporter base, the 2,600 or so United fans backing the new venture represent a tiny proportion of the club’s local, national and worldwide following.
