2012 BID NEWS: NEW STADIUM PLANS FOR NEW YORK

New York's bid for the 2012 Olympics could be back on track thanks to a proposed stadium in Queens, with plans for the one in Manhattan seemingly dead in the water.

On Monday, New York 2012 is set to ask the International Olympic Commission (IOC) executive board for permission to modify the bid, reports aroundtherings.com

"We're fighting to keep this dream alive," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The new arena would be built next to the existing Shea Stadium, home to the New York Mets Major League Baseball team for the past 40 years. The stadium, to be built by the Mets, would become the home ground for the team in 2009, before being used for the Olympics in 2012.

There is no guarantee that the venue change will be approved by the executive board, with the IOC vote just over three weeks away.

On Friday, New York 2012 issued a statement from Jay Kriegel, its executive director, which read: “As our Olympic bid continues, we are grateful for the outpouring of support from so many New Yorkers.

“In traditional New York fashion, they are rallying around the bid to help make our common Olympic dream come true."
