CARDIFF RETAINS CARLING CUP FINAL

The Football League has confirmed that the 2006 Carling Cup final will be played at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Sunday, February 26.

With the new Wembley stadium due to be ready in time to stage the 2006 FA Cup Final, it will signal the end of a five-year period which has seen the Cardiff venue host league play-off finals as well as cup finals.

Said Millennium Stadium chief executive Paul Sergeant of the relationship with the Football League and Football Association: “Their business has helped to put the Millennium Stadium and Wales on the map in a way that nobody could ever have envisaged, while the welcome from everyone in Cardiff, and our superb facilities, have brought glowing tributes from football fans across the UK.”

Regarding possible delays to the Wembley project, Sergeant said: “Next year's Carling Cup final will be the sixth we've staged at the Millennium Stadium and we have also told the Football Association that if there are any problems with Wembley being finished on time, then the Millennium Stadium is open for business for any other of their matches.”
