2012 BID NEWS: FURTHER DELAY ON NY STADIUM

A vote on the $2billion stadium proposal for Manhattan, deemed crucial to New York’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, has been postponed.

No new date was scheduled for the state Public Authorities Control Board (PACB) to act on the proposal, which, according to Newsday, US Olympic officials said must be approved before the International Olympic Committee (IOC) chooses the 2012 host city on July 6.

Governor George Pataki, a supporter of the proposed stadium, granted the delay under the rules of the board.

State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority leader Joseph Bruno, two of the three PACB board members, have argued they have insufficient information on the project for the state to commit $300million.

Pataki said he has sent Silver and Bruno “formal answers to the major questions that have been raised” and the vote will be rescheduled “at the earliest possible date”.

Meanwhile, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he is confident New York is seriously challenging London and Paris in the race for 2012.

IOC president Jacques Rogge, speaking during a visit to London, said he expected the five-city race to go right to the wire.
