FANS FLOCK TO SPL

The Scottish Premier League (SPL) has revealed a further rise in attendances, breaking the 3.5 million barrier for only the fifth time in 40 years.

Average attendances for Bank of Scotland Premier League matches rose three per cent to 15,658 and an extra 103,351 supporters came through the gates in 2004/05 compared to the previous season.

It follows yesterday’s announcement by the Football League in England that attendances across all three divisions were at a 45-year high.

However, the figures also show that a larger percentage of the population attends professional soccer matches in Scotland compared to England, Italy, Spain, France, Holland and Germany.

Lex Gold, executive chairman of the SPL said: “This was a stunning season with competition throughout the league culminating in all the main issues being decided in the last weekend, and in the case of the Championship, the last few minutes.”
