KENYA 2016 BID GETS MORE SUPPORT

Kenya’s Minister for Roads, Public Works and Housing, Raila Odinga, has backed calls for Kenya to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Kenya’s Sports Minister Ochilo Ayacko first announced a possible 2016 bid last January.

According to local newspaper the Sunday Nation, Odinga said that a country needed to be ambitious and Kenya had a right to bid for the Games as it produced some of the best athletes in the world.

When the announcement was made last January, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge welcomed Kenya’s bid, saying it would receive IOC support.

Whilst the East African nation has no modern facilities to stage the Games, some argue that 2016 is far enough away for Kenya to improve its infrastructure.

Rogge added Kenya would have to make big infrastructure improvements for its bid to be taken seriously, and would require the commitment of vast tracts of land that the Kenyan government does not currently have available.
