CRICKET PROBE LAUNCHED IN SRI LANKA

The latest event in the controversy engulfing Sri Lankan cricket saw police force their way into Sri Lanka Cricket's offices just hours after chief executive Duleep Mendis resigned.

Cricket administration in the country has been thrown into turmoil following allegations of financial mismanagement.

In March, sports minister Jaeevan Kumaratunga suspended the board and appointed an interim committee instead. Last week the interim committee appointed to run the game was formally recognised by the International Cricket Council.

Sri Lankan Cricket has denied charges of misusing funds and gained an injunction to prevent officials entering their headquarters.

But when that was overruled, police took direct action on Tuesday by entering the building in Colombo to install the new committee, reports the BBC.

Mendis has said it has become very difficult to work in the current environment, but his resignation has not been accepted.
He has been caught in the middle of the crisis that has seen the former board, headed by Thilanga Sumathipala, take legal action to try and secure its position.

Sumathipala was elected president of Sri Lanka Cricket for a fourth time in March. But he is still awaiting trial on fraud charges and has also been accused of having links with the gambling industry, which he denies.
