ROGGE SET FOR BATTLE WITH OLYMPIC SPORTS CHIEFS

A split has opened up between International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge and summer Olympic sports chiefs over plans for their sports to face a vote to be part of the 2012 Games.

With the strength of feeling running high the ASOIF - the body representing the summer Games sports - has called an extraordinary general assembly in Geneva on June 7.

Rogge recently announced a plan to force all the sports to face a vote at the IOC Session in Singapore to confirm they will be part of the 2012 Olympics.

To be included they have to win 51 percent support from the IOC members.

Amongst the sports demanding the extraordinary general assembly were cycling, gymnastics, weigthlifting, modern penthalon, softball and hockey, reports lycos.co.uk

Rogge has insisted there must be no increase in the number of sports in the summer Games and that if a new sport is to come in one must be thrown out.

Rugby, squash, golf, karate and roller sports are next in line if a new sport is to be included in the 2012 programme.
