The agreement gives RTL the ability to sub-license the rights to up to 16 regional and local radio stations in Germany.
This is the second radio deal to be agreed in Germany, following the major television and radio agreement with Germany’s national broadcaster ARD/ZDF, announced in May 2004.
The agreement gives RTL’s sub-licensees access to all 64 matches of the FIFA World Cup and the 16 matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup, which kicks off on June 15 this year. Interest in this event – seen as a dress-rehearsal for 2006 – is expected to be high.
The 2002 World Cup was the first time that radio rights were offered independently and separately from television.
