LEESON TRADES UP FOR SOCCER CLUB

Nick Leeson, the ‘rogue trader’ whose trading activities caused the collapse of the UK’s oldest merchant bank Barings in 1995 is to become the new commercial manager of a soccer club.

Leeson, who was jailed for four-years in Singapore for his dealings which lost the bank more than £860m, will start his new job as commercial chief at Galway United this week.

Said Leeson: “It is inevitable I will always be associated with Barings Bank but, after everything which has happened, I have moved on and I hope other people have as well."

After being released from prison, Leeson wrote a best-selling book ‘Rogue Trader’ which explained how he went from one of the bank’s top traders, to gambling on the stock market to disastrous affect.

The book was later turned into a film featuring Star Wars’ Ewan McGregor in the role of Leeson.
