CROKE PARK IN HISTORIC VOTE

An historic vote was passed this weekend which will allow Ireland’s national soccer and rugby teams to play international fixtures at Dublin’s 82,000-capacity Croke Park.

Previously only made available for gaelic sports, the relaxation of the strict laws enforced by the Gaelic Athletic Association was sparked by the need to find a new home for Irish home games in the two sports following the redevelopment of Lansdowne Road.
There had been fears the teams would have been forced to play in the UK if a deal had not been agreed.
Once the three-year redevelopment project is complete the ban will once again come into force.
The decision was taken on Saturday by the GAA with strong views expressed by those for and against the idea.
However, the majority voted in favour of staging talks about hosting future games – for the first time in 120-years.
