IOC URGE WADA BACKING

IOC president Jacques Rogge has called on national Olympic committees to urge their governments to back the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code before the Turin Winter Olympics next February.

Rogge said a common international approach would help in the fight against doping.

He said combating drug use was the number one priority for global sport, adding that there could never be a doping-free sport.

Rogge has already warned that athletes found dealing drugs in the Olympic village at the 2006 Winter Games will be jailed.

He also said last February that Italian police had been given the green light to launch raids on the athletes' village if they suspect anyone of dealing.

But Rogge said athletes simply caught using drugs will not risk jail, with the IOC, WADA and international federations convinced that suspension from competition is sufficient.
