2012 BID NEWS: STADIUM DEAL PUTS NY BID ON TRACK

New York’s bid to stage the 2012 Olympic Games appears to be back on track following the city transportation authority’s decision to allow the New York Jets to build a stadium on Manhattan’s West Side.

The Jets new home would become the Olympic Stadium.

The lack of a firm and agreed stadium proposal has long been considered a serious weakness of the New York bid which, according to leaked reports, was – along with London and Paris - otherwise well rated by the International Olympic Committee's (IOC’s) inspecting commissioners.

“When the IOC Evaluation Commission visited New York in February, the Governor and I made a commitment that we would get the stadium done,” said New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

“The unanimous decision by the board members of the MTA [Metropolitan Transportation Authority] shows widespread support and enthusiasm for this project not just here in New York City, but across the region. We have taken another major step forward in what has been a lengthy and thorough public review process.”

The Olympic Stadium will be located on the West Side of Manhattan, as part of a comprehensive plan that includes the expansion of the Javits Convention Center, the extension of the No. 7 subway line, an extensive network of parks and greenways and new waterfront access.

The IOC will select the host city on July 6, 2005 in Singapore.
