TSUNAMI GAME TAKE TOPS $3MILLION

The tsunami benefit match between the northern and southern hemispheres at Twickenham earlier this month raised $3.35million, reports the International Rugby Board (IRB).

The IRB presented a cheque for that amount to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the largest single donation the WFP had ever received from a sporting event.

The sum comprises revenues raised from ticket sales, sponsorship, broadcast rights, online and telephone donations, programme sales, concession sales, and merchandise sales.

"The profile of the match played a critical role in highlighting the long-term nature of the crisis in Asia and served as a timely reminder that while the short-term crisis might be fully funded, the long-term rebuilding work has only just begun, will go on for many years and still needs more funding to ensure its successful completion," said IRM chairman Syd Miller.

The southern hemisphere side, which contained the captains of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, won the March 5 match 54-19.
