AFC DENIES AUSTRALIAN SWITCH

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has denied reports that a decision has already been taken for the Football Federation of Australia to join it as a new member.

The AFC released a statement that confirmed talks had taken place with Australian soccer’s governing body, but that no final decision has yet been taken. The proposed move would see Australian soccer leave the Oceana FootbaII Confederation (OFC).

The statement adds that whilst the AFC presidency, the OFC and Australian soccer administration’s leadership believe that such a move could be mutually beneficial to all parties, it would need to be sanctioned by world governing body, FIFA.

This issue will be discussed at the AFC executive committee meeting on March 23 in Kuala Lumpur.
