2012 BID NEWS: PARIS TO USE TEMPORARY SITES

Paris 2012 has revealed to the visiting International Olympic Committee’s Evaluation Commission its plans to construct seven temporary pavilions for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The plan lays out the strategy for use of state-of-the-art, custom-made pavilions, designed to optimise the Olympic budget while securing a lasting legacy. Permanent venues are intended for long-term use while temporary venues will be constructed where no post-Olympic use has been identified.

A study on use of the facilities before and after the Games was conducted by Bouygues, a leading multinational construction company, and NCSSLI, a Swiss-based company that specialises in temporary pavilion design.

A concept known as ‘pre-recycling’ would see the use of the pavilions in lieu of existing facilities while those are being prepared in advance of the Olympics. The pavilions would be erected well ahead of the event to allow sporting activities, such as training and competitions, to continue uninterrupted.

After the Games, the pavilions would be integrated into broader social and urban development projects, such as the Major City Projects (Grands Projets de Ville, or GPVs), based in approximately 50 locations across France. This is designed to help urban neighbourhoods establish athletic and social programmes and provide multi-purpose venues suitable for hosting regional and national events.

Henri SC)randour, president of the French National Olympic Committee and a member of the Paris 2012 Founding Committee, said: “As a result, the Paris 2012 Olympic and Paralympic budget, estimated at less than Euros 4.16 billion, is relatively modest.

"We fully anticipate that the Olympic revenues will cover the estimated cost of the Games. Importantly, there will be no requirement for public subsidy of the Olympic operating budget.”
