GREEKS LOOK TO F1 FUTURE

Greece’s ambitions to win a slot on the F1 calendar have been boosted by the identification of a site on which to build a track.

The country's tourism minister, Dimitris Avramopoulos, said that a site at Viotia, some 100 kilometres north of Athens, would make an ideal location, although no other details have been reported.

Greece’s neighbour and bitter rival Turkey had already won a prized place on F1 schedule. Istanbul hosts its first Grand Prix in August.

Unlike Turkey, Greece is a member of the European Union and some observers wonder whether existing and planned legislation on the promotion of tobacco and other products might impact on Greece’s ambitions.

Recent additions to the calendar have been in non-EU states.
