BEIJING EXPECTED TO DELIVER SURPLUS

Jian Xiaoyu, Beijing 2008 executive vice president, has revealed that the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games should leave a surplus of $16million.

The People’s Daily reports that the organising committee’s (BOCOG’s) budget shows an estimated income of $1.625billion and expenses of $1.609billion, leaving the $16million surplus.

Income from the 2008 Games will reportedly come from the sale of broadcast rights to the Games, from the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) broadcast partners, from BOCOG’s marketing income, from sales of Olympic souvenirs and tickets, from subsidies given to BOCOG by the government, and from income derived from the sale and auction of materials after the Games.

Expenses will be mainly for organisation, management and operational funds of the Games, as well as security and public health.

Jiang said BOCOG plans to use the surplus to establish an international sports friendship foundation.
