2012 BID NEWS: IOC POLL SHOWS 70 PER CENT LONDON BACKING

Results of an independent poll carried out by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) reportedly showed a 70 per cent backing for London’s bid across the UK and 68 per cent in the city of London.

It was an improvement on London 2012’s own survey that showed 68 per cent support nationwide.

The IOC poll was carried out at the end of last year and the results will not be officially published until May at the earliest when the IOC’s evaluation commission completes a report on the five bid cities, says Standard Sport.

Mike Lee, communications director for London 2012, refused to confirm or comment on the IOC’s poll, reports the Daily Mail newspaper.

The IOC’s poll of Paris 2012 is understood to have shown slightly better figures than London’s.

Meanwhile, the IOC evaluation commission is currently visiting New York and members yesterday heard president George W. Smith vow full backing for the $3.6billion bid.
