Metcalfe, an Olympic and Commonwealth medalist and an influential figure in the sports broadcasting world, has directed and produced live Olympic Games television coverage, and was the first head of sport at UK terrestrial broadcaster Channel 4.
He launched pan-European sports channel Eurosport and received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to sports broadcasting in 2000.
Metcalfe has worked closely with TVNW managing director Martin Perry in the past, both in the UK and in Canada, where he was responsible for distributing the television rights to the 2003 World Weightlifting Championships, produced by TVNW. The event received the widest coverage in the history of the sport.
Said Metcalfe: “Vancouver is a fantastic place to be at the moment - it is in a key crossroads position between old world and new, east and west, and best of all, the Winter Olympics coming up in 2010. TVNW also provides a significant cost /quality advantage over similar services in Europe. I look forward to working with this exciting new player in the media industry."
Metcalfe’s appointment is part of a major restructuring of TVNW, which now has seven divisions: sports production, original programming, facilities & outsourcing, corporate media services, media management, marketing and distribution.
The expansion of the TVNW Media Group brand comes after the company provided more than 90 hours of programming for Canadian national sports channel TSN and another 30 hours for UK terrestrial broadcaster Channel Five.
Programming was also carried by many broadcasters around the world, including the BBC, Japan’s NHK, NTV in Russia, CCTV in China, Canal Plus in Europe, Canada’s CBC and a range of cable and satellite networks across Latin America, Asia and Africa.
