IRAQI SOCCER TRAINING PROJECT

More than 70 trainees from across Iraq will participate in a coaching course founded on a learning programme developed by the English Football Association.

It is part of the ongoing ‘Football United’ initiative launched by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London and Iraq on September 15.

The course will provide qualified assistant soccer coaches to develop grassroots soccer in Iraq and deliver coach and player training in future phases of the ‘Football United’ programme.

English FA-trained instructors will provide instruction in the areas of coaching techniques, group skills, planning and management of group coaching through the programme, hosted at the Al Shaab Stadium in Baghdad.

Additional lecturers will include the veteran Iraqi National coach and hero, Emanuel ‘Ammo’ Baba, and the current national coach, Akram Salman.

Graduates of the course will return to their respective towns to help with further stages of the project, including the training of more than 1,000 12- to 17-year-olds.

It will culminate in a tournament for these age groups to take place in Iraq during Spring 2005.
