MITCHELL HOPES TO RAISE 888.COM STAKES

Rob Mitchell has been appointed UK sports marketing manager for 888.com, the online casino and poker room.

Reporting directly to UK marketing manager, Matt Robinson, Mitchell's responsibilities will include sports media buying and acquisition of new sponsorship deals.

As well as managing existing sponsorship deals, he will be evaluating and taking on new sports properties to generate online traffic and build the 888.com brand in the UK.

Mitchell was previously head of sponsorship at Interbew UK, one of the world's largest brewers. He was responsible for sponsorship activity across a portfolio of brands, which included the Stella Artois Tennis Championships, rugby's Heineken Cup and Boddington's sponsorship of the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.

After leaving Interbrew in 2004 and spending several months in Asia, Mitchell spent two months working with Heineken in Greece, heading up the venue management team for Heineken's sponsorship of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

In July 2004, 888.com became main sponsor of the Premier League side Middlesbrough and was an official sponsor of the 2005 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship that took place in early January 2005.

888.com is also the sponsor of individual sportsmen including Masters snooker champion Paul Hunter, UK Championship winner Matthew Stevens and 12 times world darts champion Phil Taylor.
