BUCHANAN BACKS ONE-DAY CHANGES

Australia's coach John Buchanan agrees that changes are needed to the format of one-day international cricket.

He believes rule changes are needed to make the 50-overs game more interesting, claiming the current version of the game has grown “tired”.

Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar recently described 50-overs cricket as "predictable". He heads an International Cricket Council committee looking at possible changes to the format.

One proposal is getting rid of 15-overs of fielding restrictions at the start of each innings. Instead, the batting side would elect three different five-over sessions when the fielding side would be able to have just two fielders pushed back on the boundary.

Another possibility is the 'double play' - where two batsmen could be dismissed off the same ball, one out caught or lbw and the other run out.

Buchanan does not believe, however, that limited overs games should be replaced by the Twenty20 format, successfully pioneered in England two years ago and now catching on all over the cricket world.

He feels Twenty20 should be just part of the mix to make cricket attractive to more people, including youngsters and families.
