2012 BID NEWS: NEW YORK STADIUM ALTERNATIVES

Should the New York Jets lose their bid for a stadium to be built on the West Side rail yards property, a key part of New York’s Olympic bid, it appears alternatives are available.

A spokesman from the Hell’s Kitchen neighbourhood told GamesBids.com that New York has always had a back-up site in Queens at Shea Stadium, home to baseball’s New York Mets.

There are also other sites including replacing Shea Stadium completely, building in the Mets' parking area or in nearby Willets Point.

Another option for the Jets is to stay in New Jersey or participate in a new stadium project being negotiated with the New York Giants and New Jersey officials. Jet officials have reportedly indicated that the Meadowlands would be an obvious alternative if the Manhattan project falls through.

Meanwhile, according to ESPN.com, Madison Square Garden, the highest-profile opponent of the proposed $1.4billion West Side stadium, has offered $600million for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority-owned property targeted for the project.
