PACKER ASSESSES TWENTY20 CRICKET

Influential Australian billionaire Kerry Packer has reportedly started a private investigation into how to approach cricket’s latest phenomenon, Twenty20.

He is said to be keen to make sure the merits of Twenty20 cricket, the shortened 20-overs-a-side version of the game, are analysed properly and, according to the Herald Sun, he has even consulted Australian star Shane Warne for his opinion.

Packer is determined to make sure his network, Channel 9, which has broadcast cricket for almost 30 years, remains at the cutting edge of the sport and presents what the public wants.

Packer revolutionised the sport in 1977 when he signed up the game's best players to feature in his rebel World Series Cricket. This eventually led to the successful running of the current triangular one-day tournament.

Having seen how Twenty20 has caught on, Packer is mindful this new version of the game could boom internationally and domestically, like the 50-overs format did for many years. But the current triangular one-day tournament has attracted widespread criticism for being predictable and boring.

The Australian cricket summer is up for review in April as officials prepare to renegotiate television rights with Packer and his men. The success of Twenty20 cricket means it is likely to become a key part of new negotiations.

Cricket Australia has sanctioned an inaugural Twenty20 interstate competition for next season.
